Suntory and stars – Tanabata comes to aqua kyoto

Posted on June 24, 2014

We’re great romantics here at aqua so we’re delighted to be partnering with Suntory whisky to bring the touching Japanese tradition of Tanabata to London on Sunday 6th July.

Tanabata tells the story of two lovers cast to opposite sides of the Milky Way, who are forbidden to meet except on Tanabata Day – the seventh day of the seventh month – and then only if the stars align and the weather holds out. Japan’s answer to Romeo & Juliet, these two young lovers make their wishes to meet again and tie them to bamboo trees ahead of Tanabata Day.

On Sunday 6th July from 2pm-9pm, the terrace at aqua kyoto will be transformed into a Japanese-style garden, complete with lanterns and bamboo trees to which guests can tie their own wishes. On arrival, guests will be treated to a complimentary Yamazaki or Hakushu whisky highball cocktail, to sip while enjoying the atmospheric beats of top Japanese DJ, Koichi Sakai.

Suntory, pioneering, multi award winning whisky producer, will be showcasing its two newest whiskies the Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve and Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve in highball serves. Since 2009 the highball has become synonymous with ‘young Japan’ and is now the most popular whisky serve in Japan’s cities.

Aqua kyoto mixologists, led by Suntory Brand Ambassador Zoran Peric, will be serving up a range of refreshing highball serves including a classic Hakushu highball from Suntory’s forest distillery and a few twists on the highball including the Yamazaki Orange Blossom and Hakushu Summer Breeze made with elderflower.

We hope you’ll join us for a unique celebration of this beautiful romantic tradition – and that whatever you wish for on Tanabata Day, it comes true. No bookings are required for the Suntory Tanabata Terrace, but why not join us for our famous Infinity Brunch as part of the day? Book a table on the About Us page.
